Britney Jean Spears 1981. december 2-án született Kentwoodban, Louisianában. Már kislány korában tudta, hogy zenei karriert szeretne befutni és tehetségét a helyi templomban mutatta be, ahol elénekelte "What Child Is This", sőt a tv-ben is, ahol fellépett egy tehetségkutató műsorban.
8 évesen Britney részt vett egy meghallgatáson a népszerű gyermekrevübe, a Mickey Mouse Clubba, de fiatal korára hivatkozva elutasították. Szerencséjére azonban a show egyik producere felfigyelt Britney tehetségére és segített neki ügynököt találni New York Cityben.
Britney a következő három nyarat New Yorkban töltötte, ahol a híres Off-Broadway Dance Centerben és a Professional Performing Arts School-ban tanult. A későbbi nemzetközileg ismert sztár korábban reklámokban és Off-Broadway show-kban szerepelt, s az egyikben ráadásul egy ártatlannak tűnő, de valójában nagyon gonosz 10 éves lányt játszott,.
Három évvel első Mickey Mouse Club-beli visszautasítása után, a 11-éves Britney-nek végül sikerült szerepet kapnia mint "Mouseketeer". A show más tehetséges fiataljaihoz csatlakozva, Britney megmutathatta színészi képességeit, ének- és tánctudását a show-ban, amely olyan szép társak karrierjét is elindította, mint Keri Russell és Christina Aguilera. Spears 2 évig élt családjával Orlandoban a show-ban szerepelve, majd a showműsor megszűnte után visszaköltözött Kentwoodba és középiskolában folytatta tanulmányait.
Britney életének egyetlen normális éve tizennégy éves diáklányként volt. Énekesnői álmaitól vezérelve szűknek érezte kis vidéki szülővárosát és újból New York Citybe költözött, ahol elhatározta, hogy szerződést köt egy nagy lemezkiadóval.
Britney végül is a Jive Records-al kötött szerződést, miután egyik vezetőjét lenyűgözte a demokazettája. Együttműködve Eric Foster White-tal, azzal a producerrel, aki korábban a Boyzone-nal és Whitney Houstonnal is dolgozott, Britney debütáló albuma 1999. január 12-re készült el.
A ...Baby, One More Time c. felvételt olyan dalok követték, mint a "Crazy" vagy a "Sometimes". Az album hetekig vezette a Billboard toplistáját, a RIAA által 12 - szeres platinalemezzé lett nyilvánítva (csak az USA-ban több, mint 9 millió példányt adtak el belőle), és Britney megkapta az 1999-es MTV Europe Awards Legjobb női énekes, Legjobb popénekes és Legújabb tehetség díját. A második albumának felvételei alatt, Britney édesanyjával együtt könyvet írt Heart to Heart címmel, illetve nagy világkörüli turnéra indult.
A nagy Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson és Madonna imádó Britney-ről a sajtó állandóan álhíreket szellőztetett meg, így pl. mellnagyobbításáról, s az 'N Sync-es Justin Timberlake-kel és Anglia legjobb partijával, William herceggel folytatott állítólagos szerelmi ügyeiről.
A Britney Spears körüli felhajtásnak nincs vége, hiszen az énekesnő visszatért a porondra újabb albumával, melynek címe Oops!...I Did It Again. A címadó dalt kísérő videoklip is óriási siker lett (melyben Spears kisasszony megint csak megtette, csak most egy szexi vörös bőrruhában). Az albumot kísérő második világkörüli turnéval és rajongók millióival Britney megvalósította azt, ami csak kevés művésznek sikerült 18 évesen.
